SAMPRB Announcement

Unfortunately, SAMPRB is no more. Fortunately, that’s only because we rearranged the letters and renamed ourselves BMPR (pronounced “bumper”) – we think the new name is a little easier to roll off the tongue and will help us as we reach new horizons. What else is new you ask? See for yourself…

Don’t you just love the smell of new Play-Doh? Fresh out of the can, it’s so pliable — the shape and design possibilities are endless.

The thing is: Play-Doh’s potential isn’t truly realized until you see other people’s creations. Those examples are a launching pad for your own works of art.

That’s true for social media, too.

To help you figure out how to mold and shape Twitter and Facebook in a way that best serves your organization, we’ve asked a group of everyday users to give you the 4-1-1 on their strategies.

Speaking at Tuesday’s lunch:

1. Deborah Martin: is the director of public relations for San Antonio College. She’ll share how the college is using social media sites like Twitter and Facebook to both market the school and connect with students and the community. (5 min.)

2. Nora Frost: is the owner of Dos Culturas (Spanish for “two cultures”), a business specializing in public relations and marketing para todos (“for everybody”). She handles the PR for The Cleto Show, a half-hour comedy show based in San Antonio, found on Fox 29 every Saturday evening. She’s done a great job of using Twitter to both get the word out, build excitement and help the stars connect with viewers. (5 min.)

Hang on to your hats we’ve got good news and sad news.

Sad news first: Andi Narvaez, our dear friend and co-founder of SAMPRB, is leaving us. Lucky for her, the move is a good one. She is leaving behind San Antonio to become a full-time graduate student at the University of Maryland and further her communications savvy.

If you haven’t already surmised, Andi is one of those special people who lives, eats and breathes all things creative. She (being the PR in the SAMPRB) has been a driver of this big crazy bus and we will miss her bright mind, big heart and shiny smile. Lucky for us, Andi will be trying to set up a D.C. version of SAMPRB — so we will be working and connecting with her and her East Coast counterparts. Still, we will miss her warm Ecuadorean spirit.

Good news second: To help fill the void Andi is leaving behind, we are introducing two new members of the SAMPRB executive committee.

Nan Palmero: Nan Palmero, MBA, is Chief Inspiration Officer at SalesBy5. Below I’m listing his professional description. But I like to call him Mr. Helpful.

This guy has an enormous technological brain and he is always willing to share that information with anyone who asks. The proof: He’s got more than 4,000 followers on Twitter — many of whom seek his advice on PDAs, social media apps and more. The truth is that his talent was being wasted sitting in the SAMPRB crowd — we wanted him to be part of the team and help take us to new heights. Think of him as the B in SAMPRB.

He is married to the lovely Ashley Palmero, a wedding photographer, and they have a very cute dog with his own Twitter page: @clunkerspalmero

Nan is a coach for Strengths, a data-proven team-building process that teaches teams how to play to their strengths and manage around their weaknesses. He also is professionally trained with data-backed processes to teach companies how to better market themselves and attends several top-tier business conferences each year. Additionally, Nan is recognized as the resident Power User for BlackBerryCool.com, an international BlackBerry enthusiasts’ blog. His continued education in that arena also comes from attending world-class conferences around the country to learn the newest trends in technology and communications. Nan’s blog on mysa.com can be found here: http://voices.mysanantonio.com/nan_palmero/

Jessica Young,23, is an account coordinator at KGBTexas Public Relations / Advertising here in town. Jessica will be the PR in SAMPRB — following in Andi’s footsteps. A native San Antonian, Jessica graduated from Alamo Heights High School and Texas State University. She has a passion for art — and that includes a particular love of cooking and baking. (I personally can attest to her incredible oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. Burp.)

“I have only recently immersed myself into the world of social media and all it has to offer, but I have loved everyone that I have met and everything that I have learned,” Jessica says.

“Jessica is personable, a great listener and she has an apt mind for learning new things,” says colleague Andi Narvaez. “She shares our enthusiasm for discovering more uses for social media and innovating in the good company of colleagues and peers.”

To find out more about Jessica, check out her blog: http://jessyoung.wordpress.com

Joe Ruiz, KSAT’s nightside Web Editor, my other trusty SAMPRB co-founder, and I hope you’ll welcome Nan and Jessica. We’ve got some exciting things in store which we’ll announce on July 21st.

At our next tweetup we are shifting the focus to find out more about YOU. What are you doing? What do you want to accomplish? What challenges are you facing? How can you overcome them? How can social media help? What can we all do to help?

Please RSVP ahead of time. There are 75 spots available –> RSVP here

Introducing July’s topic:

Social Media Co-Entrepreneurship: When our Facebook friends and Twitter followers become our business partners

You are wasting your time with social media unless you learn how to build meaningful relationships (there, I said it). Fortunately, that’s the only thing that’s for dinner – or should I say lunch – at SAMPRB. Our guest speakers (list coming soon!) will talk to us about their experience using social networks and channels to connect with others in and /or outside their industries to make things happen, find opportunities and do business. These are people who are walking the talk. They have tripped along the way, dodged roadblocks, moved forward and are still going. Case studies anyone?

We will end with a new list of “Social Media Tips & Tools.” So bring something to take notes with. Just kidding. I meant bring your phone

Feel free to get the discussion going ahead of time – Submit a comment or use the #SAMPRB hashtag on Twitter.

I stepped outside today and it was 91 degrees (felt like 191). “Holy cow! That means it’s June!,” I said to myself. “Time for another tweetup.”

We have great news for SAMPRB #4…

Even though 50 is a whole lot of people, 60 is more. So pack your bags because SAMPRB is going to Alamo Café on U.S. Highway 281 this month. Read on to see the menu options an don’t forget to bring cash, which covers your meal, drink, tax and gratuity. A big thanks to @momonmars (A.K.A. Debi Pfitzenmaier) for helping us get in touch with the people at Alamo Café. By the way, have you read her blog yet? If you have kiddos and live in San Antonio, you should. By the way, now that we are getting the hang of this we will try to move the event to restaurant venues around the city to give everyone a little variety. If there is somewhere closer to home or work that you would love to recommend feel free to leave your suggestion in the comment section of our brand new “venues” tab.

Because multitasking in a room full of people can be a bit challenging, we were offered live streaming help by KSAT videojournalists @wmcaldera (A.K.A. William Caldera) and @googoovideo (A.K.A. Robert Paniagua) and, of course, we gladly accepted So look forward to an improved live stream service and follow these two gentlemen! Details will follow.

Now that you know what’s new, be sure to RSVP ahead of time. There are only 50 60 spots available –> RSVP here

Was that all too good to be true? There’s more. This month’s topic is…

Social Media Legal Issues and Policies -

Not everything is peachy

Our guest speakers (list coming soon!) will talk to us about social media policies for companies and employees. They will also present case studies related to legal issues with social media including privacy and personal identity. Bring questions!

And, by popular request, we will dedicate 10 minutes (or however long it takes us) to list a few more useful social media tips, tricks and tools. The Web is constantly changing. This is a way to help each other keep up.

Feel free to get the discussion going ahead of time – Here or on Twitter using the #SAMPRB hashtag.

Judging by how hectic this week has been after a holiday and the usual running around at home and the office, I wouldn’t blame anyone if they who said they forgot what day it was and that SAMPRB 3 was tomorrow.

That’s right. Only a few hours away.

Another thing I seem to lose track of are social media tools, clients, applications tips, trends and tricks. But in the true spirit of social media I usually get the 4-1-1 on the latest and greatest about this topic from social network friends on the very channels that brought us together in the first place or – when I’m lucky – face to face, at events like… oh, I don’t know… tweetups?

For our third installment of the SAMPRB tweetup we have invited a local experts to talk to us about useful tools and tips to make the most of our favorite social media sites and the technology we use to access them – Twitter, Facebook, WordPress, iPhones, Blackberries, Macs, PCs. Here is a list of what awaits you tomorrow, either in real-time or via the SAMPRB Ustream live broadcast:

How to master WordPress – Sean Loyless from Blellow

How to jailbreak your iPhone – KSAT crew

Twitter clients – Colleen Pence (Macs), Tim Hanson (PCs) and Joe Ruiz from KSAT (Web)

Ladies and gentlemen… start thinking up some questions.

On a last note…

Before we tweetup

To make things run a little more smoothly, we are coordinating food orders and payment a little differently this time. All for the best we hope.

Please enter the tweetup through the patio door. Paloma Blanca service staff will direct anyone found wondering around aimlessly. The waiters will take your orders as you walk through the door. The menu is below in case you want to take a look at it ahead of time. The waiters will also take your payment at the door to make it easier for everyone to get back to the office when the time calls for it. Please bring $14 in cash or check only. This includes your meal, a drink, tax and gratuity. If things go as planned, logistics will go a lot more smoothly this time and we can all use our precious time to meet more new, great people.

Tomorrow’s menu options:

Chicken Fajitas

Pollo al Cilantro

Enchiladas Verdes

Ensalada Esmeralda

If you couldn’t make it or RSVP, don’t despair. We will live stream the tweetup via Ustream and live tweet using the #samprb hashtag. Feel free to participate right from your office or from home.

Feel free to post a comment here or send an update using teh #SAMPRB hashtag if you have any questions, comments about this month’s topic, suggestions for future tweetups, if you would like to let us know what projects you are currently working on that the group can help with or if you would like to connect to SAMPRB in any other way.

See you at the tweetup!

Get up. Get ready. Go to work. Come home. See family. Get up. Get ready. Go to work.

You get the picture. In this circular escalator of life we lead, it’s easy to pass people by on the street without a second thought. It’s a struggle to keep up with the family and friends we already have.

Still, our lives always are richer, though, for making the time to meet new friends, connect with other people who share in our career passions.

This is what the San Antonio Media, PR and Business Tweetup is all about. At our monthly luncheons, there are colored index cards for participants to fill out and answer the question: “What are you up to?” Every month, we’ll post an update — allowing members to share their new projects, ongoing contracts and latest struggles. The hope is that these SAMPRB connections will lead to new business collaborations, tips or tools. Below is a wrapup from SAMPRB 2.0.

What’s another benefit of showing up to the next SAMPRB Lunch Tweetup? We just might profile you! Our goal every month is to speak with some of those who show up and allow them a chance to explain how social media benefits them professionally and personally, as well as talk about what they’re working on. Who knows? You might need them.

This week’s profile is journalist Travis Poling, who can be found on Twitter and on his own Web site. Enjoy. We hope to see you at No. 3. Sign up now before all the spots get filled. It’s free to show, $14 to eat at Paloma Blanca.
