JulyAttendessJuly’s tweetup was our biggest one yet. We want to say thank you to all 96 of you who attended, those watching from the office / home and those who were unable to attend but were there in spirit.

1. Deborah Martin: the director of public relations for San Antonio College shared how Twitter and Facebook have helped her connect recent graduates with the college’s career services office, find information about an event before attending and booking potential speakers for the upcoming National Council of Marketing and Public Relations.

2. Nora Frost: the owner of Dos Culturas (Spanish for “two cultures”), a business specializing in public relations and marketing para todos (“for everybody”) shared how she uses Twitter to promote The Cleto Show, San Antonio’s first sitcom.

3. Travis Poling: the man behind Beer Across Texas shared how fellow Twitterers, @lalorek and @paul_berry, convinced him to give Twitter a try and how he has been hooked ever since. Travis now uses the social network to promote his business, stay up to date with what breweries are up to making sure things don’t go flat.

4. Ryan Kelly: the founder, owner and chief analyst of Pear Analytics shared how he uses Twitter and LinkedIn groups and polls in his business. Ryan talked about a new study Pear Analytics is conducting to gauge how people and businesses are using social media. His theory? Self-promotion will stand out among all other uses. Ryan also mentioned as a tool to filter your Twitter stream and cut down the noise.

5. Colleen Pence: the owner of Social Media Mentoring shared how she has helped Brasserie Pavil, a local French bistro, jump on Twitter and use it to take reservations, respond to praise, questions and concerns, promote services and menu specials and more.

Luis Sandoval Jr.: Talked about the importance of branching out, exploring and using other social media networks to reach target markets.

Kim Fisher: shared the ways in which Twitter has made a difference in her work as a reporter for News 4 WOAI. Kim uses Twitter to reach viewers and get story ideas from the public, businesses and public relations professionals.

Barbara Permilla Roth: shared how she will use her blog to document her journey into Israel – Aliyah, which in Hebrew means to go up, ascent.

Kevin Joyce:  talked about the crazy, cool thing that is Twitter and how Imagine Fellowship has used it to build a upportive, helpful and participative community.

Unfortunately, SAMPRB is no more. Fortunately, that’s only because we rearranged the letters and renamed ourselves BMPR (pronounced “bumper”) – we think the new name is a little easier to roll off the tongue and will help us as we reach new horizons. What else is new you ask? See for yourself…

Don’t you just love the smell of new Play-Doh? Fresh out of the can, it’s so pliable — the shape and design possibilities are endless. 

The thing is: Play-Doh’s potential isn’t truly realized until you see other people’s creations. Those examples are a launching pad for your own works of art.

That’s true for social media, too. 

To help you figure out how to mold and shape Twitter and Facebook in a way that best serves your organization, we’ve asked a group of everyday users to give you the 4-1-1 on their strategies.

Speaking at Tuesday’s lunch:

1. Deborah Martin: is the director of public relations for San Antonio College. She’ll share how the college is using social media sites like Twitter and Facebook to both market the school and connect with students and the community. (5 min.)

2. Nora Frost: is the owner of Dos Culturas (Spanish for “two cultures”), a business specializing in public relations and marketing para todos (“for everybody”). She handles the PR for The Cleto Show, a half-hour comedy show based in San Antonio, found on Fox 29 every Saturday evening. She’s done a great job of using Twitter to both get the word out, build excitement and help the stars connect with viewers. (5 min.)

3. Travis Poling:  A longtime San Antonio journalist, Travis traded in his daily newspaper deadlines for something frothier — a business based around beer. Through Beer Across Texas, Travis conducts tastings across the state and shares the wisdom in his book “Beer Across Texas: A Guide to the Brews and Brewmasters of the Lone Star State” (Maverick Publishing, summer 2009). Learn how he’s used social media to launch his business. (5 min.) 

4. Ryan Kelly: Founder, owner and chief analyst  of Pear Analytics – a San Antonio analytics company that helps companies get the most ROI from their Web sites and Web presence. Find our how Ryan uses Twitter and other SM tools to expand his business and stay in touch with his customers. (5 min.)

5.. Coleen Pence: Owner of Social Media Mentoring, Colleen Pence advises several local clients about social media. We’ve asked her to talk specifically about her work for Brasserie Pavil, a local French bistro that is using Twitter daily to build relationships with local diners by tweeting daily specials, offering Twitter discounts and more. (5 min.

Tips and Tools: Andi Narvaez and Nan Palmero will offer a 5-minute look at useful applications. Matt Scherer will speak briefly about URL shorteners – how to use them in conjuction with your social media accounts.

Andi says goodbye; two say hello

Hang on to your hats we’ve got good news and sad news.

Sad news first: Andi Narvaez, our dear friend and co-founder of SAMPRB, is leaving us. Lucky for her, the move is a good one. She is leaving behind San Antonio to become a full-time graduate student at the University of Maryland and further her communications savvy.

If you haven’t already surmised, Andi is one of those special people who lives, eats and breathes all things creative. She (being the PR in the SAMPRB) has been a driver of this big crazy bus and we will miss her bright mind, big heart and shiny smile. Lucky for us, Andi will be trying to set up a D.C. version of SAMPRB — so we will be working and connecting with her and her East Coast counterparts. Still, we will miss her warm Ecuadorean spirit.

Good news second: To help fill the void Andi is leaving behind, we are introducing two new members of the SAMPRB executive committee.

Nan Palmero: Nan Palmero, MBA, is Chief Inspiration Officer at SalesBy5. Below I’m listing his professional description. But I like to call him Mr. Helpful.

This guy has an enormous technological brain and he is always willing to share that information with anyone who asks. The proof: He’s got more than 4,000 followers on Twitter — many of whom seek his advice on PDAs, social media apps and more. The truth is that his talent was being wasted sitting in the SAMPRB crowd — we wanted him to be part of the team and help take us to new heights. Think of him as the B in SAMPRB.

He is married to the lovely Ashley Palmero, a wedding photographer, and they have a very cute dog with his own Twitter page: @clunkerspalmero

Nan is a coach for Strengths, a data-proven team-building process that teaches teams how to play to their strengths and manage around their weaknesses. He also is professionally trained with data-backed processes to teach companies how to better market themselves and attends several top-tier business conferences each year. Additionally, Nan is recognized as the resident Power User for, an international BlackBerry enthusiasts’ blog. His continued education in that arena also comes from attending world-class conferences around the country to learn the newest trends in technology and communications. Jessica PhotoJessica Young,23, is an account coordinator at KGBTexas Public Relations / Advertising here in town. Jessica will be the PR in SAMPRB — following in Andi’s footsteps. A native San Antonian, Jessica graduated from Alamo Heights High School and Texas State University. She has a passion for art — and that includes a particular love of cooking and baking. (I personally can attest to her incredible oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. Burp.)

“I have only recently immersed myself into the world of social media and all it has to offer, but I have loved everyone that I have met and everything that I have learned,” Jessica says.

“Jessica is personable, a great listener and she has an apt mind for learning new things,” says colleague Andi Narvaez. “She shares our enthusiasm for discovering more uses for social media and innovating in the good company of colleagues and peers.”

Tweetup: It’s All About Connections

Get up. Get ready. Go to work. Come home. See family. Get up. Get ready. Go to work.

You get the picture. In this circular escalator of life we lead, it’s easy to pass people by on the street without a second thought. It’s a struggle to keep up with the family and friends we already have.

Still, our lives always are richer, though, for making the time to meet new friends, connect with other people who share in our career passions.

This is what the San Antonio Media, PR and Business Tweetup is all about.  At our monthly luncheons, there are colored index cards for participants to fill out and answer the question: “What are you up to?” Every month, we’ll post an update — allowing members to share their new projects, ongoing contracts and latest struggles. The hope is that these SAMPRB connections will lead to new business collaborations, tips or tools. Below is a wrapup from SAMPRB 2.0.

Andy Thomas@ABT70 – is a former Express-News copy editor who is looking for work as a writer or editor. He Twitters and blogs, mostly about the weather, writing and editing.

The bad news is that the 5th was Cinco de Mayo and if you missed it you have a whole year to go until the next one, again. The good news is that another great SAMPRB tweetup is coming up, fast.

Last month we successfully (according to popular vote) introduced the concept of having an official theme while also keeping the floor open for questions and more discussion. What personal branding should mean to you

In the changing economy, there are more people fighting for fewer, better jobs (be they career or freelance). So while you’ve obviously got some of the chops, you have to find a way to stand out among the others like you. Dependent upon which group you fall under (media/PR/biz), this will happen in a few different ways, but the general lessons are the same, most of which we hope you’ll take away if you RSVP and attend the second SAMPRB lunch tweetup at noon, April 30 at Paloma Blanca.

Coming from the media side, I can understand why many non-digital natives (specifically in journalism) may feel a little uneasy about personal branding. We’ve always been about getting the story, not playing a role. As somebody who’s been online for over 10 years now (never thought I’d be saying that), I’m used to living my life online, which is what David Cohn (he of fame) suggests journos do to establish their identity.

Personal branding doesn’t mean slapping a logo on yourself. It just means being exactly who you are right now (yes, you… the one reading this) but doing that online.

That lesson works for everybody, not just journalists, but so do some of the other lessons from that post. David warns against becoming (or enabling) those who create a fake persona solely for promotion.

These characters often rely on personal brands that are pure flash. Which is to say: They aren’t living their lives online – they are creating a fake persona. There is self-promotion which is understandable in a world of freelancers and then there is shameless self-promotion which is unbecoming.

At the lunch tweetup, we hope to share information from those who have done so and those who are learning about the best ways to establish your presence online. Jacob Share has more than a handful of tips for establishing a personal brand, including one of my favorites that you can do right now for very little investment.

  • Register your own name as a domain name. If not available, use your personal brand name or some variation that won’t confuse people and will still reinforce your brand.

By doing that, and creating a Web site, you being to establish a digital resume and home for your online life. For those unfamiliar with building a Web site, I recommend using WordPress as using its powerful blog customization tools to showcase your work and how best to find you online.

In my own case, I had to purchase a .net domain considering the .com version of my name was a redirect for a flutist (WARNING: Link begins playing audio immediately). He’s since lost the domain, but it was snapped up by another group. That’s not a huge problem (unless single women think I play a mean jazz flute, which I don’t), considering a Google Search for my name brings up my Web site as the top result and four links relating to me on the first page. That’s not to be arrogant, though, I just want to point out what establishing a brand can do for you, especially when you mesh it together by name, company or personal brand name.

SAMPRB tweetup #2

If there was one thing to take away from the first, very successful, San Antonio Media/Public Relations/Business (SAMPRB) St. Patrick’s Day tweetup (besides the great people, delicious food and lively discussion) it was the fact that this niche group of fellow Twittering San Antonians are clamoring for more opportunities to get together with peers and like minds.

Officially, the SAMPRB tweetup will take place towards the end of every month in an effort to get together at least once over lunch for a chance to ask questions, share advice and form relationships with people who are in your same line of business or work for sister industries.

Although tweetups are usually informal and unstructured, we have proposed a theme for the next tweetup in order to get our minds geared up to start thinking about good questions or issues to bring up for discussion. The topic for SAMPRB tweetup #2 is…(drumroll)
